The Dutch word ‘lastig’ roughly means ‘difficult’. But a ‘tig las’ is a type of weld. Anne Pabon’s project combines the different meanings implied in the pun; it is a welding course for prisoners, with a bicycle as the finished product. The first inmate to take part in the program, Richardo, has proudly finished the bicycle frame and received his welding certificate. The inmates’ enthusiasm, coupled with the confidence of having mastered a complicated craft and possessing a diploma, will make it easier for them to find a place in life outside once their sentence is over.
